Almost 5 years!

Mini recap of the last four years….(& a well overdue newsletter!) as we embark on the new season & our fifth year…In 2014 we had this crazy idea to open a tearoom!… sometimes opportunities are there for the taking & not to be missed, so with no money …but a lot of imagination, determination & help we started a new venture.

Who’d have thought that things can change so much, from the initial idea of drinks & home made cakes to what we have now…a small rural enterprise…how things can change & develop form one small pipe dream! our idea of a new life, with new emphasis on quality of life has totally taken on a new meaning. as some say we only work four days a week, how luxurious…but it’s not  always called work & it’s not work as some know it.

Don’t get me wrong at times its been fraught, like many self employed folks will know & as we can’t control the weather, its sometimes been frustrating… but thankfully, so far, we’ve had more ups & only a few downs…however, thanks to our lovely loyal customers & exceptional friends we’ve managed to keep going…

There’s definitely been some funny things that have happened over the years, like when we found out  we couldn’t serve hot food…even though previous owners have done so for years!…so planning & application forms were frantically submitted (Phew!) & thankfully the NYMP passed them

or when we had some false teeth left on the toilet shelf!?…a customer kindly mentioned  her unusual finds quietly to me behind a hushed hand & thankfully we were able to re-united with their owner a few weeks later!

or when we had a phone call asking if we accepted dogs in the tearooms…”of course we answered gleefully!” & and two of the largest newfoundlands arrived with their owners. They slowly & quite gracefully spread out over the entire floor much to folks amusement, we’ve even had a budgie enjoy some berries whilst visiting with a wonderful regular customer…we weren’t quite expecting that one!

With groups of walkers, ramblers, cyclists, tourists, friends & families all visiting us, theres always much laughter and only a little bit of teasing from the chef…when he’s allowed out of the kitchen! but no two days are ever the same….

…when we have tables booked just to make sure they’re guaranteed a seat…thats a good feeling…or when we have orders for 3 whole lemon meringue pies for a regular group of walkers….(now thats great planning) or when the Bakewell tart’s devoured heartily by early morning cyclists while its still warm…it makes chefs day!

Introducing our evening Dining “Tag’s Bistro” has brought new challenges & customers, chef’s one off menus mean theres always something different to choose from, & front of house waistline is expanding due to having to be head of quality control!

The Loft, our holiday accommodation has started to attract new visitors to the area, what’s not to like here in the heart of the North York Moors? some folk totally immerse themselves in exploring the moors, others simply relax & go off grid, simply enjoying quiet walks with stunning views & then wander back to our peacefull & tranquil lodgings.

The newest addition to our enterprise is our allotment…how impressive is that for food miles?…approx 50 paces! all organic & very fresh, & with our funny brood (some say flock) of chickens protectively looked over by Alfonzo the Cockerel, we’ve an abundance of fresh eggs. With a small wildlife area to encourage lots of wildlife visitors,  we’re really taking on board the importance of creating an all round wholesome approach to our food & what the customers want.

And so its almost easter & the start of our fifth season…we’re open 4 days a week again & although there’s been a few changes to the layout over the last 2 years…the atmosphere and decor is still very much eclectic and comfortable… easily accessible & a warm & welcoming wood burner quietly emitting heat on those cold days…

It won’t be long until our next event Lockton Artists Open Studios (LAOS) …theres 11 artists taking part this year…(we’re a creative bunch here in the village!) 2 out of the 3 of us (including new staff member Claire, who’s recently moved to the village) are taking part in the event…so make sure you save the date & come & have a nosey around the studios & simply have a wander around the village, & of course pop in for a drink & bite to eat while you’re here…

well there you have it……as you can see there’s never a dull moment here in our little beautiful & wonderful pocket of rural happiness… hope to see you soon…

Kevin, Janilaine & team
